Lexington Legends cancel doubleheader after earlier shooting at the stadium injures 7
The Lexington Legends and Wild Health Genomes have canceled a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday night after a shooting at the stadium early Saturday.
The shooting at a private event at the facility at 1:48 a.m. left seven people injured, police said. Two people were injured in separate shootings after that Saturday morning.
The Legends announced in a statement Saturday afternoon that the decision to cancel the doubleheader was made “in an effort to pay respect to the victims of the shootings in Lexington last night.”
“This decision was made by Legends management in order to pay our wonderful community the respect it deserves,” the statement says. “The decision to cancel the game was not made due to any safety concern for our fans, players, coaches and staff as our stadium remains a safe, enjoyable and fun atmosphere for all families and fans to enjoy the great game of baseball. In addition, we look forward to working with community leadership to ensure our city remains safe and suitable for our all families and businesses.”
The doubleheader was scheduled to start at 4:35 p.m., and Saturday night was to be Faith and Family Night at the stadium, with a concert and post-game fireworks as part of the night’s events.
The Legends said their normal home schedule will resume with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Stadium officials and police have not provided details about the private event being held when the shooting occurred.
“We are cooperating with the Lexington Police to assist their investigation into this shooting hoping to bring accountability to whomever is responsible,” CEO Andy Shea said in a statement earlier Saturday. “We have been asked not to discuss the specifics of the situation due to the ongoing criminal investigation. However, I can say, the Stadium regularly houses events including charity events, little league team events, birthday parties, office get-togethers, and other community gatherings outside of baseball. At all events, including those mentioned, trained and professional security are always present ensuring all applicable codes, regulations and standards are followed.”
