Ky. high school teacher arrested over allegations of illegal sexual contact with student

A high school teacher in Western Kentucky has been charged with having an illegal sexual relationship with a student, according to a release from Kentucky State Police.

Benjamin A. Adams, 26, of Bowling Green is charged with first-degree sexual abuse and third-degree sodomy.

Officials with the Logan County Board of Education contacted state police on Thursday about possible sexual contact between Adams and a student at Logan County High School, according to a citation filed by Jonathan Carlock, a detective.

Police interviewed the girl, who said she’d had a sexual relationship with Adams, the citation said.

The allegations included sexual contact between Adams and the girl on school grounds after hours, Carlock wrote.

Paul Mullins, the superintendent of Logan County Schools, told the Herald-Leader that Adams was an art teacher who was in his third year of teaching. Adams resigned from his job after he was charged, Mullins said.

Mullins said he couldn’t comment further on the situation.

The citation said police arrested Adams at school. He declined to answer questions and was booked into the Logan County Detention Center.

The definitions for the charges against Adams include a person in a position of authority or special trust subjecting someone under age 18, whom he or she met as a result of that position, to sexual contact.

In a series of stories last year, the Lexington Herald-Leader found that sexual misconduct was the top reason that Kentucky teachers facing discipline lose their licenses.
