Eastern Kentucky teacher, basketball coach charged with rape

A Rowan County Senior High School teacher and basketball coach has been charged with rape, according to court documents.

Andrew Zaheri, 39, has been charged with rape third-degree, according to jail records. His arrest citation says he is a teacher at Rowan County Senior High School.

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s website lists Zaheri as an assistant basketball coach for the school’s boys’ basketball team.

Zaheri had an ongoing sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student, according to court documents. He was booked into the Rowan County Detention Center Wednesday morning, according to jail records.

In a since-deleted statement on Facebook, the school didn’t identify Zaheri as the suspect but said an employee facing allegations of inappropriate sexual misconduct has been placed on administrative leave.

“Rowan County Schools take all allegations of inappropriate behavior seriously and will cooperate with the appropriate agencies throughout the investigation,” the school said in the statement. “Rowan County Schools’ top priority is ensuring the safety of our students.”

Kentucky State Police said an investigation is ongoing.
