Two Lexington police officers hurt in assaults by man who stole a cruiser, crashed downtown
Lexington police say a man assaulted an officer and drove away in his cruiser Saturday afternoon before crashing and hurting another officer who was trying to apprehend him.
The incident began at about noon, when an officer stopped a man who was reportedly removing a manhole cover at 239 East High Street, said Lexington police Lt. Dan Truex. That is the address of the High Street YMCA.
The man then assaulted the officer and took off in his police cruiser, Truex said. After a short pursuit, the man crashed the cruiser into another vehicle near High Street and Broadway.
Truex said another officer was injured while apprehending the man, who fought back.
One of the two injured officers and the driver of the vehicle that was hit by the cruiser were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, WKYT reported.
The suspect also sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, Truex said.
The suspect was identified as Trenton Adkins, according to WKYT. Adkins, 27, faces several charges: robbery, theft, fleeing police, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended or revoked license, possessing burglary tools, and multiple counts of wanton endangerment.
High Street was shut down at Mill Street while police investigated, but the street reopened by about 2 p.m.
