Man accused in fatal shooting of high school football player said he had drunk 10 beers
The man accused in the fatal shooting of a Carroll County High School football player told investigators he had drunk 10 beers and had a shot of bourbon before shooting the teen in the chest early Sunday, court records show.
Timothy Stone, 40, of Owenton, said he was showing a rifle to the 16-year-old when he pointed the weapon at him, according to a uniform citation filed by Kentucky State Police in Owen District Court.
The victim, identified by the Owen County coroner as Bryce Stewart, died at the scene on Squiresville Road about five miles west of Owenton as a result of a single gunshot wound to the chest, state police said in the citation.
Stone is charged with second-degree manslaughter and was being held in the Carroll County Detention Center Tuesday on $100,000 bond.
His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday morning.
Bryce would have been a junior this fall at Carroll County High School, where he was a football player, cheerleader, vice-president of Future Farmers of America and was a junior fair board member, according to his obituary.
“He was a friend to many, confident in trying new things, and never met a stranger,” the obituary stated. “Bryce was a dedicated Carroll County Panther, with an ‘eat, sleep, breathe’ football attitude. Weight lifting before school was a regular part of his football routine. He was an avid outdoorsman, whether it was farming, hunting deer, turkey, and coyotes or fishing and frog gigging. He was always busy doing something.”
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday afternoon, with members of the football team serving as pallbearers, according to the obituary.
