Kentucky man arrested after explosive device found in his home

A Kentucky man was arrested Thursday after police found a military-style bomb inside his house, according to Irvine Police Chief John Sturniolo.

The bomb was found inside a home on Stevens Avenue in Irvine. Sturniolo said local police were serving an unrelated arrest warrant on Marcus Spurgeon, 33, when officers noticed suspicious items in his vehicle.

Sturniolo declined to elaborate on the items found in the vehicle, citing an active investigation.

“They just weren’t items that you would typically find in a vehicle,” Sturniolo said.

After the discovery of the suspicious items, Spurgeon gave police a written consent to search his home, according to Sturniolo. That’s when officers found the device along with rifles, pistols and ammunition.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene at Irvine police’s request, according to Sturniolo.

“He took some pictures, sent them to his bomb tech,” Sturniolo said. “The bomb tech came in from Georgetown, X-rayed it and deemed that the casing was loaded with some type of powdery substance.”

The bomb was secured in a frag bag and removed from the scene, Sturniolo said. It has been sent off for further examination.

Spurgeon was booked into the Three Forks Regional Jail Thursday night on charges of second-degree disorderly conduct and first-degree indecent exposure from the unrelated warrant, Sturniolo said. Spurgeon was charged with three more counts of first-degree wanton endangerment from the incident.

Spurgeon’s bond is set at $25,000 from the wanton endangerment charges and $650 from the misdemeanor charges, according to court records.
