The Lexington Police Department assisted the U.S. Marshals Service with arresting a murder suspect in a Lexington neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

Lexington police Lt. Brandon Helm said police responded to the 3800 block of Sugar Creek Drive at 11:50 a.m. at the request of the U.S. Marshals, who were serving a warrant for out-of-state murder charges. The neighborhood is near Tates Creek and Wilson Downing roads.

The suspect was taken into custody just before 3 p.m., and there were no injuries, Helm said.

The U.S. Marshals Service said the Detroit Area Fugitive Task Force requested help from the Central Kentucky Fugitive Task Force in locating the suspect. The suspect was wanted on a second-degree murder charge, stemming from a stabbing that happened in Detroit on Nov. 13.

The suspect was located inside a duplex on Sugar Creek Drive Tuesday. The U.S. Marshals Service said the suspect was partially barricaded inside a second story closet but later surrendered without incident.

The name of the suspect was not released by the U.S. Marshals Service or Lexington police. Jeremy Honaker, acting U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Kentucky, said the marshals service won’t release the suspect’s name due to an agreement with local jurisdiction.

However, court documents indicate that Rudy McPhaul, 37, was the suspect arrested. His arrest citation says he was arrested on Sugar Creek Drive at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and and his primary residence is on Sugar Creek Drive.

McPhaul is being held at the Fayette County Detention Center, according to jail records. He appeared in Fayette District Court Wednesday and is due back in court Jan. 26.

McPhaul is also on probation for assaulting a police officer, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections website. He previously served a sentence for four counts of assault with intent to commit murder and a weapons charge.

Two armored vehicles, the police helicopter, many officers and the fire department were present at the scene, and law enforcement could be heard giving commands over a PA system.
