A Green County man is charged with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence after a crash that left one man dead and another seriously injured, Kentucky State Police said Saturday.

The collision happened on West Buckner Hill Road Friday night, when Larry Waters, who was heading west in a Chevrolet Lumina, crossed the center of the road as he approached an eastbound Jeep Wrangler, state police said in a news release.

The driver of the Jeep, Justin Smith, 30, of Greensburg, steered onto an earth embankment on the right side of the road to try to avoid the crash, but the vehicles sideswiped each other and the Jeep flipped, state police said.

Smith and three passengers, all from Greensburg, were thrown from the Jeep, according to state police.

One passenger, Blake Mitchell, 28, died after being taken to University of Louisville Hospital. Smith also was taken to U of L Hospital with serious injuries. The other two men in the Jeep refused treatment, state police said.

Waters, 49, of Greensburg, refused treatment and was taken to Taylor County Detention Center on charges of DUI first offense, vehicular homicide, first-degree assault and two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.

State police said they were called to the scene at 8:23 p.m.
