Ky. man allegedly showed up at sheriff’s office, confessed to killing pregnant girlfriend
A Morgan County man has been charged with murder and fetal homicide after he allegedly went to the sheriff’s office and told the sheriff he had killed his girlfriend by “cutting her throat.”
Jeremy Schraufnagel, 49, went to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office at about 1:10 p.m. Monday and told Sheriff Greg Motley that he wanted to talk with him about a “domestic situation,” according to a police uniform citation filed in Morgan District Court.
Schraufnagel then told the sheriff he had killed his girlfriend during an argument, the citation states.
Motley detained Schraufnagel and dispatched EMS to the address on Redwine Road in West Liberty where he said the killing occurred.
Motley and Kentucky State Police also went to the scene, where they found the woman dead inside the home, according to the court document.
State police said in a news release that the woman, Shannon Dustin, was pronounced dead by Morgan County Coroner Shawn Vancleve.
Schraufnagel told police Dustin was pregnant and the baby was due in December, which her family confirmed, according to the police citation.
In an interview with state police, Schraufnagel allegedly said Dustin told him during an argument that she planned “to go back to Ohio with an old boyfriend and he would not be able to see his child.” He said “he snapped and strangled her,” placing her in a choke hold for about two minutes, according to the police citation.
“Mr. Schraufnagel stated he did not remember much after that but remembered standing over her, with a knife and there was a pool of blood,” the citation says.
Schraufnagel is charged with murder and first-degree fetal homicide.
