Teen charged with fatal shooting in Lexington that left another teen dead
Lexington police have made an arrest in the fatal shooting that left a 17-year-old dead in March.
Jon’tay Mattingly, 19, was arrested Thursday and charged with murder. Police said he is being charged for the shooting death of Kenlon Johnson.
The shooting happened March 8 in the 2400 block of Rockaway Place, in the Masterson Station neighborhood. Johnson died at a hospital.
Police said its real-time intelligence center helped identify Mattingly as the suspect. He is being held at the Fayette County Detention Center on a $1 million bond, according to jail records.
Mattingly’s arrest warrant says he was identified as the suspect by an anonymous tipster. Cell phone records placed Mattingly’s phone in the area of the shooting when it occurred and DNA collected at the scene came back as a match with Mattingly.
At the time, it was the city’s second homicide of the year. Now the city has reported 17 homicides.
Mattingly was out on probation at the time of the fatal shooting, according to court records. In July 2022, Mattingly accepted a plea deal for charges of second-degree robbery (with a firearm), second-degree fleeing/evading, receiving stolen property, first-degree wanton endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid or assistance and possession of a handgun by a minor.
As part of the deal, the robbery and fleeing/evading charges were amended down, while additional charges of second-degree criminal mischief and violations of conditions of release were dismissed.
The next month Mattingly, was sentenced to eight years in prison, according to court records. He was 17 at the time.
In December 2022, a few days after his 18th birthday, Mattingly was resentenced and given a probation period of three years, according to court records. However, in August an order was filed for his probation to be revoked after Mattingly violated multiple terms of his probation, including failed drug tests, failure to pay fines and court costs, failure to maintain educational and occupational requirements and providing false information to his probation officer.
Mattingly also faces charges of third-degree fleeing evading, failure to appear and probation violation, according to jail records. He is scheduled to appear in Fayette District Court Friday for an arraignment.
