A Kentucky mother has been charged with murder after her 3-month-old baby died from abuse at a hospital, according to Kentucky State Police.

Brianna “Morgan” Burkhart, 23, of Clay County, was originally indicted on three counts of first-degree assault and one count of first-degree criminal abuse — child 12 or under in June. KSP said a superseding indictment for one count of murder was handed down Thursday after a presentation to the Clay County Grand Jury.

KSP said it received a suspected physical abuse complaint involving a 3-month-old baby in April. The baby suffered multiple fractures, hemorrhages, and retinal bleeding and was sent to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

On Sept. 10, the baby died at the hospital, according to KSP.

An investigation is ongoing and further action is pending in Clay County Circuit Court, KSP said. Burkhart is being held on a $400,000 bond, according to court records.
