Kentucky school officials find unloaded gun in student’s backpack
Schools officials in Harrison County found in unloaded gun on school premises Friday, according to Superintendent Harry Burchett.
The gun was found inside a student’s backpack, Burchett said. There was no ammunition present, but school officials confiscated the weapon and reported it to school security officials and local law enforcement.
Burchett didn’t mention what school the incident happened at, but WKYT reported it happened at Westside Elementary School.
The student was also removed from the school. Burchett said no student and staff were ever in danger.
“All violations of state law by the student or parent will be prosecuted to the fullest extent,” Burchett wrote in a press release.
Also, on Wednesday, a Harrison County student posted a photo with a gun in their home on social media, Burchett wrote. That was unrelated to Friday’s incident, but he encouraged parents to be safe with their guns.
“Parents and guardians, please do not fall victim to a bad decision by a child under your care,” Burchett said in a press release. “Please do not think that your child won’t or is incapable of making a life-altering decision. I implore you to secure all weapons in your home.”
