A Campbellsville man was arrested Saturday evening after the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department says he fired shots at the sheriff, hitting his vehicle.

Taylor County Sheriff Dickie Benningfield and a deputy responded to a call on Pops Road in which the caller said Cody Laytart, 31, had shot at them.

Benningfield was standing near the driver’s side taillight of his patrol vehicle when he heard three shots coming from a nearby address, the deputy wrote in a uniform citation filed in Taylor District Court.

As the deputy arrived, he heard a final shot and saw that the passenger side taillight on Benningfield’s vehicle had been shot out. Three other bullet holes were found in the tailgate.

The officers found the gun on the porch of the home where the shots had come from, and Laytart was found inside, lying face-down on a bedroom floor. He “appeared to be passed out or pretending to be” and was placed in handcuffs, the citation states.

Laytart then began yelling, telling the officers to “to just shoot him” and saying he was going to kill them, according to the citation.

He was taken from the home “by force” and placed in a patrol vehicle. In the process, he spit in the deputy’s face and kicked the vehicle’s window, records show.

Laytart was taken to the Taylor County Detention Center and is facing charges of attempted murder of a peace officer, third-degree assault of a peace officer, resisting arrest, terroristic threatening, criminal mischief, public intoxication and violating conditions of release.

He was to be arraigned Monday in Taylor District Court.
