A man shot by a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy this month had a knife and was in the midst of a mental health crisis, according to Kentucky State Police.

The shooting happened Jan. 18 on Devils Hollow Road. State police released initial details then, and on Monday released more information.

KSP said the man, 34-year-old Justin Jennings, was yelling, injuring himself and not complying with officer commands when police arrived at the home. To protect other people inside the home, KSP said, deputy Stevie Rice shot Jennings.

Jennings was taken to Frankfort Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, and he remained there as of Tuesday morning.

Jennings was charged with third-degree assault of a police officer and menacing, according to KSP. The department’s investigation into the incident is ongoing.
