Driver arrested after hitting two men changing tire on Bluegrass Parkway. One is dead.
A Hardin County man turned himself in to police and was charged with vehicular homicide after a hit-and-run accident involving two men who were stopped to change a tire on Bluegrass Parkway late Friday, Kentucky State Police say.
State police said Amari Mays-Clark, 20, of Frankfort, died after being hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Jason T. Hamilton, 48, of Rineyville.
State police said Hamilton did not stop after hitting Mays-Clark and another pedestrian at about 11 p.m.
Mays-Clark was standing near the rear driver’s side bumper of a vehicle stopped in the parkway’s westbound emergency lane near mile marker 13 in Nelson County when the Jeep crossed the fog line and hit him, as well as another man who was changing a tire, state police said in a news release.
The Nelson County Coroner’s Office pronounced Mays-Clark dead at the scene. The other pedestrian who was hit was taken to Baptist Health Hardin with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to state police.
Hamilton turned himself in several hours later, state police said.
He is charged with vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol, fourth-degree assault with minor injury and leaving the scene of an accident — failure to render aid or assistance. Hamilton was being held in the Nelson County Detention Center.
The westbound lanes of Bluegrass Parkway were closed for several hours while state police investigated.
Kentucky High School Athletic Association records indicate that Amari Mays-Clark was a senior on the Franklin County High School varsity football team during the 2023-24 school year.
