How do you know if that bill is counterfeit? Laurel County Sheriff’s Office offers tips
The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after several counterfeit $50 bills were found recently at London businesses.
Ten of the fake bills were discovered Tuesday at a business on Keavy Road. The sheriff’s office provided photos of suspects who they say may have used the fake money.
On Thursday, 10 more counterfeit $50 bills were found in a bank bag by local bank officials. The sheriff’s office said the bills came from a business on Barbourville Road.
It’s unknown if the two cases are connected. Anyone with information on the suspects or the investigations is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office at 606-864-6600.
How to identify counterfeit bills
The sheriff’s office provided a few tips for identifying fake money. Legitimate bills of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 should all have the following:
- An embedded security thread with the denomination of the bill
- A watermark containing the portrait image of the portrait on the bill. The watermark should be on the right side and detectable from the front and back of the bill.
- Color shifting ink
- Embedded red and blue fibers
- Sharp fine print and distinctive ridges.
- Unique texture compared to ordinary paper
The sheriff’s office said all features must be present on a bill, otherwise it is not real.
