Kentucky sheriff shoots at man driving truck toward him during police chase
A Kentucky sheriff shot at a man driving a truck toward him during a police chase Thursday, according to Kentucky State Police.
Authorities said they were contacted shortly after 2 p.m. about the incident. Fleming County Sheriff Tim Smith tried to pull over 34-year-old Isaac Spears, of Hi Hat, but Spears did not stop and a pursuit began down Goddard Road.
While driving a Dodge Ram pickup, Spears got stuck on the dirt road, state officials said.
Smith left his cruiser and approached the truck, but Spears was able to get the truck moving again, and he drove toward Smith.
KSP said Smith gave verbal commands for Spears to stop but he did not comply. Smith shot the window of the truck, and Spears stopped.
Spears was checked out by by Fleming County EMS at the scene and was medically cleared, according to KSP. No officers were injured in the incident.
Smith was booked into the Mason County Detention Center on charges of first-degree fleeing/evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree criminal trespassing, reckless driving and disregard of a stop sign, according to jail records.
KSP is investigating the incident, as it does whenever a law enforcement officer is involved in a shooting.
“KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation,” agency officials said in a news release.
“To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered.”
