A man was shot and killed by Kentucky State Police Thursday after police said he pulled out a gun during a standoff.

KSP said the shooting happened around 4:45 a.m. at a mobile home park, where 54-year-old James Walter was firing shots into the air. Walter eventually went inside his home, continued to fire his gun and threatened to shoot law enforcement.

Police evacuated residents of the mobile home park and attempted to de-escalate the situation with negotiation techniques. KSP said the agency’s Special Response Team arrived and continued negotiations with Walter.

At some point, Walter opened the door to his home and presented his firearm, according to KSP. Members of the Special Response Team opened fire and fatally shot Walter.

No other injuries were reported, according to KSP.

KSP is investigating the shooting, as is standard practice when law enforcement members are involved in shootings. More details about the shooting are expected to come out at a later time.

“KSP is committed to being transparent while ensuring the integrity of the investigation,” KSP said in a press release. “To protect the integrity of an ongoing investigation, it is KSP’s standard operating procedure not to release specific details until vital witnesses have been interviewed and pertinent facts have been gathered.”
