Pike County man charged with attempted murder after pinning officer while fleeing

A man was shot at by Berea police after he allegedly pinned an officer between two vehicles at a Walmart Tuesday morning, according to the the city’s police department.

Officers were investigating a stolen vehicle report at the Walmart on Jill Street, just off Interstate 75, at the time of the incident, according to the Berea Police Department. Police said officers tried to talk to the driver, but he put the car in reverse and hit a truck and an officer, pinning him between two vehicles.

The officer fired his gun into the vehicle, and the vehicle came to a stop, police said. One officer and two others were transported to the hospital for treatment.

It was not immediately clear if the officer’s gunshot hit the man, and the severity of injuries was not immediately known either.

While officials did not confirm the suspect’s identity, court records indicate the man is 45-year-old Dustin Allen of Pike County. Allen’s arrest citation says he was in possession of a stolen vehicle from Rockcastle County and officers found the vehicle in the Walmart parking lot.

The vehicle was unoccupied when officers arrived, so they waited for someone to come back to the car. Court documents say Allen and two other people later got in the vehicle, and when they attempted to drive away, four officers surrounded it and demanded the occupants to show their hands.

Allen allegedly did not comply and pinned an officer against a detective’s vehicle, according to court documents. Officers responded by firing their guns, hitting two men inside the vehicle.

It’s unknown how many officers fired shots during the incident. KSP said only the pinned officer fired shots, while Allen’s arrest citation indicates multiple officers were involved.

Allen then pulled forward and hit another car in an attempt to flee, according to court documents. All three people were detained and treated for their injuries.

The damage to the detective’s vehicle is valued at more than $1,000, according to court documents. The other car Allen hit and the stolen vehicle also sustained damage.

Allen has been charged with attempted murder of a first responder, first-degree criminal mischief, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, receiving stolen property and first-degree fleeing/evading police, according to court records. He is being held at the Madison County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.

Police said there is no active threat to the community and the Walmart remains open, but people are encouraged to leave space for officials to investigate. Kentucky State Police is leading the investigation, as is typical when law enforcement officers are involved in shootings.

All of the people involved are in custody, according to police.
