A 36-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted rape in the fatal shooting of a Morehead teen, police said.

Another teen was wounded in the shooting.

Gildardo Martinez was charged with murder, first-degree assault and attempted rape after he was captured by police early Sunday morning.

Officers with the Morehead Police Department were dispatched to a shooting in the West Sun Street area around 2:30 a.m., according to police.

Police found two teens suffering from gunshot wounds. A 15-year-old was dead on the scene.

Rowan County Coroner John Northcutt identified the teen as Luis Jocsan Nanez Lopez.

Lopez would have been a sophomore at Rowan County Senior High School, according to Northcutt.

The second victim was transported to University of Kentucky-St. Claire Regional Medical Center and then transferred to UK Hospital in Lexington. That victim’s condition was not disclosed.

Martinez was located after a brief search of the area, according to police.

He is currently being held in the Rowan County Detention Center, according to online court records.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with additional information should contact the Morehead police.
