A Kentucky man is facing multiple charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol and assault, after hitting a horse and buggy with his car and fleeing the scene, leaving several children injured.

Ricardo Geronimo Salas, 21, of Mt. Sterling, was driving his Toyota Camry on Kentucky Route 11 on Thursday when he hit an Amish buggy being pulled by a horse, Kentucky State Police said. Salas stopped and checked his vehicle for damage before leaving the scene of the crash.

Bath County EMS transported three juveniles to the University of Kentucky Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The children were treated and released from the hospital, and the driver of the buggy was not injured, police said.

KSP said the horse was uninjured.

Salas was later taken into custody by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department. He faces multiple charges: four counts of first degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid, tampering with physical evidence, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving and failure to maintain insurance, police said.

The collision is under investigation Kentucky State Police.
