Central KY man who worked for fire department sentenced on child porn charges
A man from Richmond was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for production of child pornography, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Derek Hahn, 37, was sentenced on Monday to 330 months in prison by U.S. Judge Gregory Van Tatenhove in Frankfort, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney’s Office.
A criminal complaint filed in Lexington’s U.S. District Court in November 2024 accused Hahn of production and attempted production of child pornography, receipt or distribution of a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct and possession of material depicting a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct.
Hahn must serve 85% of his prison sentence under federal law, at least 23 years, the news release said. In addition to his prison sentence, Hahn was ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution. After he is released, Hahn will be on probation for life.
In October 2024, law enforcement responded to a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that said child sexual abuse material had been uploaded and shared with users on Kik, a messaging app, according to the release.
An investigation by Homeland Security, Kentucky State Police, Frankfort Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Department tracked the IP address to Hahn’s home and to the Richmond Fire Department where he worked third shift.
Hahn was taken into custody. Two phones were seized and searched, where multiple images and videos of minors engaged in sexually explicit activity were found, the release said.
In an affidavit filed by a Homeland Security special agent last fall, a forensic examination of Hahn’s phone showed it was used to produce videos of a child in a bathroom who does not appear to know they are being recorded. The document said the camera is recording from a hidden location, like a vent, according to the Herald-Leader’s previous reporting.
The phone had more than 3,100 images and videos of child sexual abuse material, the affidavit said.
Hahn admitted to producing the videos and images, according to the release.
