A paramedic from Kentucky has been charged in two cases of sexual assault, including one in which he’s accused of assaulting a patient while on the way to a Lexington hospital.

The victim in one case told a nurse at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital on May 15, 2024, that the paramedic who helped transport her there had sexually assaulted her.

The woman, who was being taken to the hospital for heart surgery, told the nurse that “she was ‘out of it’ due to medication given during her transport,” a uniform citation filed in Fayette District Court by Kentucky State Police states.

Shain Peterman, 32, of Morehead, who was working for Patriot Emergency Services, was determined to be the paramedic, state police said.

A sexual assault kit was completed, and state police said it showed DNA that was not the victim’s.

State police said Peterman was already being held in the Rowan County Detention Center at that time, and when interviewed by KSP he allegedly “admitted to performing oral sex” on the victim. Peterman said the encounter was consensual, the citation states.

He was charged with first-degree sodomy and is scheduled for arraignment Aug. 21.

In a second case, court records show that Peterman was indicted on a charge of second-degree rape in Rowan Circuit Court Feb. 3.

A grand jury charged that Peterman was “in a position of authority or a position of special trust” when he allegedly “engaged in sexual intercourse with another person who is incapable of consent,” the indictment states.

Peterman pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in that case June 6.
