A Kentucky man charged with attempted murder called 911 after shooting the victim, claiming self-defense, according to court documents.

The shooting happened early Saturday near the Monterey community in Owen County. Kentucky State Police said Gary Bullion, 52, shot Jamar Douglas, 26, multiple times.

Douglas was flown to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead about 24 hours later, according to the Fayette County Coroner’s Office. State police said Douglas was from Louisville.

Bullion’s arrest citation says he called 911 to report the shooting just before 2:30 a.m.. Bullion told the dispatcher he met Douglas online and picked him up at an unknown location and brought him to his listed address on Old Frankfort Pike.

The two argued, and Douglas hit Bullion. Court documents say Bullion fired a warning shot before shooting Douglas in the face.

State police investigators found marijuana, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia at the scene of the shooting, according to court documents. Investigators also found a pistol.

Bullion was interviewed after the shooting, but he didn’t answer any questions, instead asking for a lawyer, according to court documents. He was arrested and booked into the Carroll County Detention Center.

Bullion is charged with attempted murder, first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possessing marijuana and buying or possessing drug paraphernalia, according to court records. State police said its investigation is ongoing.

Bullion is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, according to court records. His bond is set at $100,000.
