Two people injured in shooting on Kentucky State University campus, police say

Two people were injured in a shooting on Kentucky State University’s campus early Sunday, according to the Frankfort Police Department.

The shooting happened around 2:35 a.m. near Young Hall at KSU. Police said multiple people in a car opened fire on a group of people, hitting and injuring two.

KSU Police officers were “already on location when the shots were fired and were able to immediately respond by securing the area,” the university said in a statement.

One of the victims suffered serious injuries, while the other suffered minor injuries, according to police. Both victims were taken to a hospital for treatment, and as of Monday afternoon, one had been released from the hospital.

Neither victim was a KSU student or employee, the university said.

“Our students deserve to learn and thrive in a safe environment,” said Koffi Akakpo, president of KSU. “We remain fully committed to protecting our campus community and will take every step necessary to safeguard their well-being.”

Witnesses told police they heard 15 to 20 gunshots. No details about a suspect or the car involved were released.

Young Hall can house up to 150 students and is on the southern end of campus. A KSU police car and the exterior of the tutoring center at Young Hall were damaged by gunfire, KSU said.

Monday is the first day of classes for the fall semester at KSU. The university remains on “heightened alert,” meaning only registered students with a valid student ID are allowed in residence halls and increased patrols are on campus.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting and are asking the public to submit tips. Frankfort police can be reached at 502-875-8523, and callers can remain anonymous.
