Woman killed in ATV crash in KY. Driver charged with reckless homicide
A Kentucky man is charged with reckless homicide after he was involved in an ATV crash that left a 29-year-old woman dead, according to Kentucky State Police.
The crash happened around 2:20 p.m. Monday on the 7800 block of Hardwicks Creek Road in Powell County. State police said Shawn Cornett, 32, of Irvine, was driving an ATV when he lost control, causing it to overturn.
Ashley Plowman, also of Irvine, was a passenger on the ATV and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Powell County coroner, according to state police.
Cornett suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Clark Regional Hospital for treatment, but he left against medical advice. Court documents say he unstrapped the seat belts from the gurney and ran away before hospital staff could do a blood draw.
Cornett was later found at his home, about 17 miles from the crash scene. Court documents say he admitted to driving the ATV during the collision, running away from the hospital and getting a ride back to his house.
Cornett also admitted to purchasing methamphetamine mixed with heroin after he left the hospital and consuming the drugs when he got home, according to court documents. He told investigators he was not impaired during the collision and had last taken drugs Saturday morning.
Cornett was taken back to the hospital and had his blood drawn, according to court records. Drugs are suspected to have been involved in the collision.
Cornett is charged with reckless homicide, all-terrain vehicle violations and operating without a license. He is being held at the Powell County Detention Center.
