A teacher in Madison County is accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old student several years ago, according to court documents.
Investigators with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Charles Hamilton, 30, on Sept. 8 after receiving allegations that Hamilton sexually assaulted one of his students at Boonesborough Elementary School.
Court documents say the student, who was 10 when the incident occurred and is now 17, told her therapist about the incident, and the therapist relayed the allegations to the Department for Community Based Services.
DCBS scheduled an interview with the student nine days later. During the interview, the student said that on the day of the incident, she needed to use the bathroom and asked Hamilton to accompany her because the power was out, and she was scared of the dark.
The student did not ask Hamilton to come into the bathroom, but he did and waited outside the stall, according to court documents. When she came out of the stall, she hugged Hamilton, and he inappropriately touched her genitals over her clothes.
Hamilton asked the student if “this was okay,” according to court documents. Hamilton’s other hand was wrapped around her waist and back.
Hamilton is charged with first-degree sexual abuse, and was booked into the Madison County Jail on Monday. He is being held on a $50,000 bond, according to court records.
Madison County Schools did not comment on Hamilton’s employment status. Court documents say Hamilton is still a teacher at the school.
Hamilton’s attorney, Abe Mashni, said his client recognizes the seriousness of the allegations but said he is not guilty.
“Our client maintains his innocence, and we intend to vigorously defend him in court,” Mashni said in the statement. “The presumption of innocence is a cornerstone of our justice system, and we ask that the public reserve judgment until all the facts are presented and the legal process has run its course.”
Hamilton was hired as the girls soccer coach at B. Michael Caudill Middle School in 2023. Hamilton also coached girls youth soccer teams with the Madison United Soccer Association.
The soccer association did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
