Tates Creek’s elementary, middle and high schools were at “heightened alert” Tuesday afternoon after a shooting in the area.

An 18-year-old was taken to a local hospital in stable condition after officers found him when they responded to a call about shots fired at Gainesway Park at about 4 p.m., the Lexington Police Department said.

Police had taped off the area around the basketball court at Gainesway Park just after 4 p.m., and an ambulance was seen leaving the area.

The Lexington Police Department’s helicopter was circling overhead, and several police cruisers were stationed at cross streets around Centre Parkway.

The incident was reported just as Tates Creek Middle School was dismissing for the day.

While all buses left the middle school campus, students who walk to and from school and a few car riders were held until the alert was canceled, said Fayette County Public Schools spokesperson Miranda Scully.

The district said the alert was canceled just before 5 p.m.

An email sent to Tates Creek Middle School families explained that safety protocols during a heightened alert dictate that no outdoor activities be held, but indoor activities continue as usual.

Walkers were dismissed, and after-school activities resumed after the all-clear was given.

Police asked that anyone with information call them at (859) 258-3600. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Bluegrass Crime Stoppers by calling 859-253-2020 or visiting bluegrasscrimestoppers.com.
