The Winchester Fire Department put out a fire at an apartment that was being investigated for possible drug activity Wednesday.
The Winchester Police Department was at the apartment, located at 503 N. Main St., around 5:08 p.m. to execute a search warrant. Officers had conducted at least six controlled methamphetamine purchases from a resident of the apartment over the past several months, according to a statement from Winchester Police Chief Travis Thompson.
Shortly after officers entered the apartment to execute the search warrant, they noticed smoke coming from underneath a bed, Thompson said. Officers attempted to put the fire out with extinguishers but were unsuccessful, so they called the fire department for assistance.
By the time the fire department arrived, the fire had completely engulfed the apartment, and smoke was coming out of the window and roof, Thompson said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, and no injuries were reported.
“We are thankful for the quick response of our partners at the Winchester Fire Department who got this fire under control very quickly preventing further damage to these residences,” Thompson said in the statement.
The resident, who Thompson did not identify, was charged with trafficking methamphetamine. A second person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
All the displaced residents from the apartment building are being helped by the Red Cross, according to Thompson. The Clark County Animal Shelter is also assisting the pets rescued from the building.
