KY man stable after being shot by Paintsville police officers, KSP says
A Salyersville man is recovering in the hospital after he was shot by two police officers in Johnson County.
Around 2 a.m. Sunday, a Paintsville police officer was patrolling on Main Street when he found a parked motorcycle matching the description of a reportedly stolen bike, according to Kentucky State Police.
The officer encountered Shawn Gayheart, 37, of Salyersville, who ran from the officer. The two got in a fight, and a second officer arrived on the scene.
Both officers deployed their Tasers in an attempt to control Gayheart, but they were unsuccessful, according to state police.
The officers shot Gayheart and provided medical assistance until EMS arrived. The officers were not named in state police’s news release.
Gayheart was transported to the Pikeville Medical Center, where he was stable Sunday afternoon.
Officers said they found a knife and a gun at the scene. They did not confirm if Gayheart remains a suspect in the stolen motorycle case.
State Police are investigating the incident, as they do all officer shootings in Kentucky.
