A Kentucky man was arrested Saturday after police say he stabbed his girlfriend to death.

The incident happened just before 7 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at a home on Kentucky Highway 72 in Harlan County. State Trooper Shane Jacobs said Michael Howard, 36, stabbed his girlfriend, Mary Clayborn, 50, in the chest and neck.

Clayborn was taken to Harlan ARH Hospital, where she later died, according to Jacobs. Her body is scheduled to undergo an autopsy at the State Medical Examiner’s office.

Howard was cooperative with officers at the scene and was arrested without incident. He is charged with murder.

Howard was being held at the Harlan County jail Monday on a $1 million bond, according to jail records. No court date has been set.

State police were still investigating the incident Monday.
