Driver charged with DUI after rear-ending Lexington police cruiser

A driver was charged with DUI early Sunday morning after Lexington police say they rear-ended a cruiser that was taking someone to jail.

The collision happened around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of New Circle Road and Old Paris Road. Sgt. Bige Towery said an officer was stopped at a red light when they were rear-ended by another vehicle.

The officer was transporting a person to the Fayette County Detention Center when the collision occurred. Towery said the officer and detainee were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was charged with DUI, Towery said. The driver’s identity was not provided.
