Woman accused of driving into a downtown Lexington crowd is indicted

A 20-year-old woman has been indicted on multiple charges after police say she drove into a crowd of people in downtown Lexington in March.

Kaydence Carpenter, of Frankfort, was indicted Monday on four counts of second-degree assault, one count of first-degree wanton endangerment, driving under the influence, reckless driving and use of a false identification card.

Police said four pedestrians were injured just before 2:15 a.m. March 22, when Carpenter drove a Tesla Model 3 over a curb and into a crowd after being involved in a disorder in a parking lot near Short and Mill streets.

Surveillance video obtained by WKYT showed the vehicle, which was surrounded by a group of people, going in reverse before accelerating forward into the group and turning onto Short Street.

Carpenter reportedly drove the wrong way on Short Street until officers stopped her. Police said there was evidence that she had been drinking alcohol before her arrest, according to court documents.

The indictment says Carpenter “intentionally caused physical injury to” each of the people injured “by means of a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument.”

It also accuses of her of buying or trying to buy alcohol with a fake ID card.

Carpenter, who was released on $5,000 cash bond the same day as her arrest, was ordered to appear for arraignment in Fayette Circuit Court at 9 a.m. July 16.
