‘Worst Neighbor Ever.’ Shooting of KY deputy jailer, wife, detailed in Netflix series
The 2018 shooting death of Montgomery County Deputy Jailer David Scott is featured in an episode of the true crime documentary series “Worst Neighbor Ever” streaming now on Netflix.
The Netflix website describes Episode 1: “She Finally Snapped.”
“When Shawna Scott and her husband, David, move to Kentucky to be closer to Shawna’s family, the last thing she expects is to reconnect with Frances Zaayer, an old family friend who just bought the house across the street from the Scotts’ new place,” Netflix’s website says. “What begins as fun rekindling of a teenage friendship turns sour when Frances’s odd and controlling behavior escalates into what Shawna says is racially motivated violence that tears Shawna’s family apart. “
Shawna Scott said in the show that Zaayer had treated Scott’s young grandson badly and then incorrectly said that Scott was working while on disability, and that Zaayer was going to turn her in.
The women got into a physical fight and Zaayer pressed criminal charges against Shawna Scott in 2017. That led to a months-long dispute with Zaayer constantly casting aspersions on the Scotts, the show says.
In 2018, Zaayer broke into the Scotts’ house.
“Shot me right in the face,” Scott says in the episode. “I went down.”
A bullet pierced her husband’s heart, killing him, according to the show.
“Our lives were torn apart in that moment,” said Scott.
She said more than 850 people attended her husband’s funeral in Mount Sterling.
Scott endured 16 facial surgeries because the bones in her face were broken.
Kentucky Department of Corrections records show Zaayer, now 59, was convicted of murder, second-degree assault, and first-degree wanton endangerment.
Zaayer began serving her 35-year sentence in 2022 and is expected to be released in 2053. She is eligible for parole in 2038. Zaayer is currently at the Kentucky Correctional Institution for Women at Pee Wee Valley, Kentucky Department of Corrections records show.
Scott said in the show that one of her biggest fears is for Zaayer to be paroled.
“Since David passed away I take one day at a time,” she said in the show.
“He didn’t deserve this. I just want him not to be forgotten.”
