A Kentucky man was arrested last month after the local sheriff’s department said he failed to notify officials of his wife’s death and kept her inside his home for many months.

John Emrich, 59, is charged with abuse of a corpse. Court documents say the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department conducted a welfare check at Emrich’s Homestead Avenue home in Radcliff June 18 and found Emrich’s dead wife inside the home.

Deputies determined that Emrich’s wife died in February, and he failed to notify officials of her death. Court documents say Emrich had been living with his wife’s body and “intentionally treated a corpse in a way that would outrage ordinary family sensibilities.”

Emrich is being held at the Hardin County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond. He does not have a scheduled court hearing after most recently appearing for a preliminary hearing on Monday, July 6.
