Bicyclist killed by pickup truck on Newtown Pike; police find driver
A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run collision Friday afternoon at Newtown Circle and Newtown Pike.
The crash happened at 3:09 p.m., police said. Newtown Circle is just outside New Circle Road. The Fayette County coroner arrived about 3:40 p.m. Coroner Gary Ginn said the bicyclist was hit while inbound on Newtown Pike and appeared to have died of head trauma.
There were multiple witnesses, and some tried to perform CPR, according to the police radio.
Some of the witnesses gave police a description of the driver who hit the bicyclist and gave the license plate number of her pickup truck, police said. Officers went to the address associated with the vehicle's registration and found a woman who they said they think is the driver. Police initially said they were looking for a silver pickup truck.
It was not immediately clear whether charges would be filed, as the police Collision Reconstruction Unit continued to investigate.
