Couple charged in death of 18-month-old

Police in Monticello have arrested a man and a woman, charging them with murder in the death of the woman's 18-month-old son.

An officer at the Wayne County Jail said Thursday morning that 20-year-old Kayla Lord and 19-year-old Jared Futrell were held on murder charges. Jail records do not indicate whether either has an attorney.

The Fayette County Coroner's office said Staten Stephenson of Wayne County died early Tuesday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

According to a press release from the coroner's office, an incident involving the child occurred on July 16. Police did not immediately return calls seeking clarification.

An autopsy was performed in Frankfort on Tuesday, and the cause of death is pending.

Funeral arrangements have been made at the Marvin S. Hicks Funeral Home in Monticello. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with services at 11 a.m. Friday, all at the funeral home. Burial will be in Parnell Church of God.
