Police identify victims in Powell explosion

State police have released the names of a man who was killed and two people who were injured when a house in Powell County exploded Thursday.

Stanley Roberts, 84, of Stanton was found dead in the kitchen of the home on Upper Paint Creek Road, about three miles north of Stanton, according to a news release.

Karen Knox of Winchester and Jerry Roberts of Clay City were inside the home at the time of the explosion and fire but were able to get out. They were both flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center with life-threatening burns.

They were listed in critical condition Friday.

The release said investigators had not determined the cause of the fire, but that it was thought to have been accidental. Danny McCormick, Powell County emergency management director, said it could have been caused by a propane explosion in the basement.

Officials said the blast blew out the basement walls and the home's windows, and it sent the front door flying more than 20 feet.
