Pocket knife helps woman escape Lexington attack

A woman used a pocket knife to thwart a would-be attacker early Friday morning in the 400 block of East Maxwell Street.

The woman, 21, was walking home from a friend's house about 3 a.m. when a man came up behind her, grabbed her and pulled her into some bushes near a floral shop, said Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts.

"There was a struggle," Roberts said. When the suspect attempted to remove the woman's clothes, she pulled out a pocket knife "to defend herself."

Investigators believe she cut the suspect, Roberts said.

The man fled on foot, leaving a few drops of blood on the ground, she said.

"Investigators believe it is his, and not hers," Roberts said.

The victim also sustained cuts to her hand and arm and was taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital where she was treated and released.
