Fleming County man who pointed gun at officers is killed

A Fleming County man who reportedly pointed a weapon at police officers during a domestic dispute Thursday was shot and killed by an officer, Fleming County Coroner Gary Workman said.

Workman identified the dead man as Thomas McClanahan, 46.

Both Fleming County Sheriff's deputies and Kentucky State Police troopers went to the scene, state police Sgt. Aaron Martin said. The Fleming County 911 center was called about 2 a.m. Thursday to a home on Watson Road, where a woman had locked herself in a bedroom with her children to protect them. Armed with a handgun, McClanahan confronted the officers and pointed the weapon at one officer. Officers from both agencies then shot at McClanahan, Martin said.

The coroner said it was unclear Thursday morning which officer fired the fatal shot.

Martin would not discuss which officer was responsible.

McClanahan was transported to Fleming County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, he said.

Workman said McClanahan was a caretaker at Hillsboro Cemetery.
