Grand jury indicts ex-Blackburn official accused of having sex with inmate

A former Blackburn Correctional Complex employee was indicted Tuesday on charges of rape and official misconduct stemming from a relationship with an inmate.

The indictment says Bernadette Luttrell, 48, was involved in a sexual relationship with Derek Nagy from May to the end of June 2013.

An investigation into the relationship began when information was given to the jails Internal Affairs Branch that an employee and an inmate were intimately involved. Afterward, jail officials were given phone recordings that indicated Luttrell was in the hospital after she found out she was pregnant with Nagy's baby, according to court documents. Luttrell, who is married, eventually lost the baby.

The indictment against Luttrell comes about the same time after 37-year-old Jennifer Wiseman, a Blackburn correctional officer was indicted on the same charges.

Luttrell joined the state corrections department in 1998. She became an office coordinator with Kentucky Correctional Industries, a division of the department, in 2007.

According to the department, she was a production coordinator at Blackburn, working in the prison's mattress plant.

Luttrell emailed her resignation to the Blackburn warden June 7 citing "unforeseen family problems."
