State police shoot Perry County man after he sets his house on fire, points weapon

A Perry County man was shot and killed by state police after a standoff at his home.

State police said they were called to Larry Smith's home on Tranquility Lane in the Chavies community at 10:46 p.m. Friday to conduct a "domestic violence related welfare check," according to a news release from state police.

Smith, 61, told the first trooper who arrived to leave and threatened him from inside the residence.

The trooper said he took cover after he heard "what he thought was rounds of ammunition being chambered into a weapon," according to the release.

After more troopers arrived, Smith set his house on fire and came outside with a gun.

He began to lower the gun in the direction of the state troopers and ignored their commands to drop the gun, state police said.

At that point, the troopers shot Smith, according to the news release.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.
