Lexington man indicted on murder charge in Chestnut Street shooting last June

A Lexington man was indicted Wednesday on charges stemming from the shooting death of another man last year.

Jefferey Charles Morris is charged with murder and tampering with evidence in the slaying of Anthony Carter. Morris also was charged with being a persistent felony offender.

Carter, 47, was found shot in the street in the 400 block of Chestnut Street. He was taken to the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital where he died on June 11.

According to court documents, witnesses told police that Morris, 31, was seen in the area before Carter was shot. Witnesses also identified Morris by his street name "Black Jeff" and said that the two men were arguing before the shooting. Morris later confessed he shot Carter, the documents said.

Morris, who was arrested in November by U.S. marshals in Arizona, is being held in the Fayette County jail. Morris is scheduled to be arraigned in Fayette Circuit Court on Feb. 2.
