9-year-old boy is shot while riding with his parents in Lexington
A 9-year-old boy was shot while riding in a vehicle with his parents in Lexington on Saturday afternoon.
The boy suffered a life-threatening injury after being shot in the neck area, police Lt. Kevin Metcalf said. Police initially thought the boy had been shot in the shoulder.
Police were called to the parking lot of Russell Cave Plaza, 1509 Russell Cave Road, at 5:46 p.m.
Metcalf said police believe that the shooting happened while a GMC Envoy in which the boy was riding was "in motion" on Hollow Creek Road, and that the boy's parents then drove into the parking lot to get help.
Metcalf said at least two shots were fired. The back window of the Envoy had been shot out. A vehicle parked in front of a house across Russell Cave Road also was hit by gunfire, Metcalf said.
Metcalf said it was "too early to tell" whether the shooting was random or what might have happened before the incident.
Police were looking for a white 2000 to 2003 Nissan Maxima with black tinted windows.
Clerks who were working in the shops said they saw the boy's parents outside the vehicle crying but did not hear any gunshots. Police were looking at surveillance video from one of the stores.
