Two people were robbed and police said the fleeing robbers later hit two apartment buildings in a stolen SUV Saturday night.

Police were called to the intersection of Oxford Circle and Cambridge Drive where a man and a pregnant woman reported being robbed by two people, one of whom was armed with a handgun, said Lexington police Lt. Joe Anderson.

He said the victims gave police a description of the robbers, as well as the white SUV in which they fled.

Soon after, a police officer got behind the SUV on Versailles Road and tried to stop it, but the driver refused to stop, Anderson said. He said the vehicle was last seen outbound on Versailles Road passing Alexandria Drive.

An officer on Parkers Mill Road then noticed the SUV in a grassy area alongside two brick apartment buildings. It appeared that the driver had gone off the road, crossed a parking lot and had driven up a grassy embankment before hitting the corner of both buildings.

The fire department was assessing the structural damage caused by the collision. The exterior brick wall of one building at 1551 Alexandria Drive appeared to be buckled.

Police brought out a helicopter and dogs to search for the two robbers and in the meantime, the owner of the SUV called police to report it stolen.

Anderson said just before 9 p.m. that one man was in custody and would be charged with first-degree robbery and receiving stolen property. Police were still looking for the second person.
