Madison County sheriff’s office investigating reports of phony deputy

The Madison County sheriff’s office is investigating after a man represented himself as a Madison County sheriff’s deputy over the phone.

The man, calling himself Deputy James Marshall, called a Madison County man and told him his wife had missed a court date for jury selection, according to the sheriff’s office. There is no deputy with the sheriff’s office named James Marshall.

The man who was called by the imposter called the sheriff’s office and reported the call. The man had told him that about 70 people had missed the court date and that his wife needed to call and “resolve the problem,” according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office called the imposter, and the man answered, “Madison County sheriff’s office.” When the people from the actual sheriff’s office confronted him, the man hung up.

When they called back, deputies got a voicemail saying it was the number of Deputy James Marshall, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office is asking anyone that has received a similar call to call 859-623-1511.
