23-year-old man dies in another shooting at Camelot East on Richmond Road
A man died Friday from an overnight shooting at Camelot East Lounge off Richmond Road, according to the Fayette County coroner’s office.
Laroz Lee Mitchell, 23, died of multiple gunshot wounds shortly before 5 a.m. Friday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, the coroner’s office said in a news release.
Lexington police said officers were dispatched at 2:41 a.m. to St. Joseph East Hospital for a man with multiple gunshot wounds, and five minutes later police received a report of shots fired at Camelot East, 2606 Richmond Road. The shooting happened around the time the bar was closing at 2:30 a.m., according to Lexington police.
The victim was later transferred to UK Hospital. Mitchell’s death was Lexington’s fifth homicide of 2016, a police spokeswoman said.
Mitchell was a 2011 graduate of Henry Clay High School, according to Herald-Leader archives. In July, Mitchell testified for the prosecution in the trial of Deionta Hayes, who was convicted in the March 2012 shooting death of Henry Clay High School student Chaz Black, said Fayette Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Dan Laren.
Mitchell and another young man were wounded in the 2012 shooting that happened at an apartment on Palumbo Drive. Hayes was convicted of two counts of second-degree assault in addition to the murder count. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
It was the second early-morning shooting this month at Camelot East. In the earlier case, no injuries were reported, but shell casings were found in the parking lot, and a window was damaged at nearby Sheabel Veterinary Hospital.
The investigation into Mitchell’s death is ongoing. Anyone with additional information about the case is asked to call police at (859) 258-3600 or the robbery homicide unit at (859) 258-3700.
