Richmond woman arrested after police find children locked in rooms

A woman was arrested in Richmond on Thursday after police found three children locked in their rooms while she “appeared to be highly intoxicated,” police said.

Emmy R. Bennett, 27, was charged with first-degree criminal abuse and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

Police entered Bennett’s home in the Dixie Plaza Mobile Home Park for a welfare check at about 10:30 p.m.Thursday following a complaint, police said. Officers said the residence was unsanitary and had trash throughout.

Officers found two children sleeping on a mat on the floor in one bedroom, and the door of the room was barricaded by a large tote, police said.

Another child was found in a separate room that was locked from the outside, police said.
