Shooting kills 28-year-old, causes University of Kentucky alert

A 28-year-old was killed and another man was wounded in a Woodland Avenue shooting that prompted a University of Kentucky campus safety alert early Saturday.

James Nathaniel Gordon died of a gunshot wound at 2:53 a.m. at UK Chandler Hospital, according to the Fayette County coroner.

A second victim, 18, was shot in the shoulder, sustaining a non-life-threatening injury, police Lt. Jonathan Bastian said.

The two men were standing outside an apartment building in the 500 block of Woodland Avenue, near the Columbia Avenue intersection, when a man came up to them and shot them, Bastian said.

Police said Saturday afternoon that detectives believe the incident “was not a random act” and that there is “a relationship between certain involved parties.” Police did not describe the relationship further.

A police officer in the area heard gunfire at 2:18 a.m. Saturday, Bastian said. The shooter was described as heavyset and about 5 feet, 11 inches tall. He wore a yellow jacket.

The man was last seen heading away from the UK campus, according to a tweet sent out by UK.

An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday at the state medical examiner’s office.
