Lexington child, allegedly taken by stepfather, found in Detroit
Police say a Lexington child who was thought to have been taken by his stepfather has been found safe with his grandmother in Detroit.
Police were searching Monday afternoon for Michael Thomas, 35, who was accused of kidnapping 5-year-old Cordell Cowans, Lexington police said.
Though Cordell was found, police continue to search for Thomas and are pursuing warrants for his arrest on charges of kidnapping and assault, police spokeswoman Brenna Angel said.
Thomas is accused of assaulting his wife earlier in the day before taking her son from their home in the 900 block of North Broadway, Lexington police said.
Police were called to the home at 3:18 p.m. Monday for a report of a kidnapping and assault, police said.
After the alleged assault, the mother talked with Thomas and asked him to return with her son, Angel said. When that didn’t happen, she filed the report Monday afternoon, and police began considering the case as a kidnapping and requested an AMBER ALERT, Angel said.
Thomas did not threaten the child or police, Angel said.
Thomas might be driving a red 2003 Ford Explorer with Kentucky license plate 094 GJY, police said.
